A local court has ordered at
least 22 social media websites, including U.S.-based companies such as
Google, Facebook and Yahoo, to delete “inflammatory” images of
religious figures from their portals, and also summoned their India
heads to appear before it in this regard, a media report said Thursday.
“Contents which are uploaded by some miscreants through these social
media sites are highly unacceptable and are inflammatory and derogatory
which cannot be accepted by any religion,” civil judge Mukesh Kumar
ordered, while summoning the India heads of 22 websites on December 24.
The court’s order came in the wake of a petition filed by former
spokesperson of the Muslim organization, Darul-Ul Uloom, and founder of
FatwaOnline.org, Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi.
Besides, India heads of
companies, such as Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, discussion forums such
as Topix, Exbii, Boardreader have been made a party by the plaintiff,
the newspaper said.
On a similar issue, talks between the Indian government and the Internet companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo had failed earlier this month, as they declined to pre-screen or remove content which is legal but controversial.
